Adolescent Found Dead After False Allegations of Taking Cremated Remains
One teenage youth was discovered deceased just days following being falsely blamed of stealing the ashes of a deceased infant during a break-in, an inquest has learned.
Tragic Finding
Kai Lloyd's mother and father found his remains in his room at his Connah's Quay home on November 19th, 2021.
False Accusations Begin
The investigation heard how his mother received a communication on November 8th, 2021 via social media, from a woman inquiring if her son was her child. The communication added: "Inform him appreciation for burgling my apartment."
In a testimony read to the proceedings, the mother said the individual had been in the news, claiming her baby's ashes had been stolen in a break-in - a allegation which was untrue.
Police Inquiry
An official inquiry from police later concluded the alleged break-in victim had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that the items was not taken in the beginning".
Media reports about the supposed taken ashes attracted online responses, and although the teenager was not identified in the posts, his parent said people "knew it was him".
The "online posts were really distressing", she stated.
Emotional Health Impact
She explained that her son had been identified with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' views really were important to him.
"It would have affected him severely," she commented, "particularly when this was not true".
The teenager was detained at home, but no evidence was found. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later freed pending further inquiry.
Police said they would be in touch, the inquest learned, but had not reached out to the relatives by the time of his death.
Isolation and Worry
His parent said her son "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the police", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like days".
When she talked to him about the supposed burglary, she said her child told her he had gone into the residence because the woman who resided there had said he could utilize the bathroom anytime he wanted, but refuted removing anything.
Digital Bullying
In a joint statement between her and her spouse, Mrs Lloyd said her child was being bullied online after the accusations.
The proceedings heard that a 19-year-old urged Kai to end his life.
She had no worries on the night before he died, explaining how she had heard him "chuckling and joking".
She portrayed him as a "compassionate, loving" young man, and said her "family is completely shattered".
He had been "obviously concealing his concerns", she said, noting that he could not bear to have anybody "think bad of him".
Educational Reaction
The inquest heard from school staff at the local secondary school.
On November 8th, she "heard some boys discussing that the student had been arrested and that was the initial I heard".
"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.
After the discussion, the staff member said she called the family's family landline and left a message saying she had spoken to Kai about the accusations.
The court heard his parents said they did not got that message.
Formal Finding
Senior coroner informed the hearing he would await reports regarding what enhancements had been made to handling suspects with the condition, before determining whether he should make a prevention of future fatalities report.
Providing a narrative finding, he said: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsupported accusations were made against the teenager, a young child.
"Probably untruths were subsequently embellished and exaggerated through the platform of online networks.
"During 11 November, he was interviewed by the authorities and after his interview he was released whilst investigations proceeded."
The official determined: "Exists no proof that the acts or failures of any organization caused or contributed to his passing and although it was the result of a personal act it is impossible to discern his purpose."
