Keely Hodgkinson Wraps Up Campaign with Winning Performance at Athlos Meet in NYC
The athlete achieved her fastest time of one minute 54.61 seconds the previous season in London.
Keely Hodgkinson finished her 800m campaign with a win at the all-female Athlos event in New York on Friday evening.
{The current Olympic champion, who earned third place at the World Championships last month, excelled in an impressive victory in 1:56.53 in what was only her sixth race in a season affected by a hamstring injury.
Fellow Briton and global silver winner Georgia Hunter Bell finished second once more in 1:58.33, while the athlete from St Vincent Shafiqua M. (one minute 58.57) secured third place.
"I haven't competed much this season so it was likely less of a struggle for me to compete and be motivated to perform," stated the 23-year-old.
"The atmosphere at the event is crazy so it was really, really fun."
The female-exclusive event packed Icahn Stadium in its second year, bringing a festive vibe to traditional track, with live music and Tiffany & Co. crowns substituting standard medals.
The tennis legend with 23 major titles Serena W., who is married to Athlos founder Alexis O., was on hand to present the winners with their crowns.
Last year's winners received $60,000 (forty-four thousand six hundred and three pounds) - among the biggest cash prizes in track and field.
The competition also drew some of the sport's biggest names, as Kenya's three-time Olympic gold medallist and world record holder Faith K. won the mile, crossing the finish line in 4:17.78.
American Brittany Brown, the 200m bronze medallist from last year's Paris Olympics, won the 100m and 200m double.
