Two Victims Revealed in the Providence Campus Incident as Law Enforcement Press On With Hunt for Killer.
The pair of scholars who lost their lives in the weekend's mass shooting in Providence were honored at the start of the week – amid a widespread hunt for their killer carried on following the freeing by Rhode Island officials of the single suspect detained in connection in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was described as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, as stated by the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a ceremony on Sunday.
Her role included vice-president of Brown’s branch of the College Republicans organization, the group said. Karoline Leavitt also shared sympathies online, stating: “There are no words. Thinking of her kin and peers, especially her parents.”
An International Student
The second fatality was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his initial year at the prestigious university, family members said.
The victim's identification was verified by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. His ambitions were lofty of entering the field of neurosurgery and aiding others,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a online post.
Details of the Attack
An additional nine individuals were injured in Saturday’s attack in the engineering building of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the university's examination week.
Authorities said by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-old male detained in a search at a lodging about 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“There is a killer at large,” declared the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
He added, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you have to regroup and head another way, and this is precisely what occurred over the last approximately one day.”
Community Anxiety
Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, admitted: “We know that this is likely to cause new worry for our community”.
The shooter began shooting inside a classroom in the building on over the weekend, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm pistol, a law enforcement official told the news agency.
Police that searched the lodging seized two handguns and magazines when the person of interest was taken into custody, according to reports.
Those Hurt
Among those wounded, a single scholar was allowed to go home, stated Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in grave but unchanging health, and one remained in critical care, authorities stated on Sunday.
Durham Academy, a private K-12 school in North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.
Additional Memorials
Tributes were paid to Cook at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only here growing up... but at Brown she was an incredible light in that particular place as well.”
A group leader, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the club. “Ella was known for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she served her chapter and peers,” he said.
The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the student's death in a message. “We extend our sincere condolences to the Umurzokov family, companions, and schoolmates and mourn the loss of his promising future.”
National Context
The fatal shooting at Brown, the country's seventh most historic higher education institution with about over seven thousand undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 shooting incidents reported in the US so far in 2025, according to records. The following Monday was the 349th day of the year.
