Methanol caution sign

The UK authorities has placed eleven new countries to its public alert list regarding the risks of industrial alcohol toxicity from tainted spirits.

This expanded warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "a worldwide rise in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of industrial alcohol contamination.

Only recently, authorities had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current list, in response to several notable cases including the fatal loss of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being warned that as little as tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can result in vision loss or loss of life within 12–48 hours.

Exactly what is Methanol and How is it Utilized?

Industrial alcohol is a harmful industrial alcohol commonly utilized in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. This chemical is not designed for drinking.

Although it is naturally produced during the creation of beverages, licensed producers bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the refining procedure.

But in some countries, it is illegally mixed into beverages to save money, and as it is tasteless and odourless, it is very difficult to notice.

Government Guidance for Travellers

Foreign Office minister a senior official emphasized that each tourist should recognize the signs of industrial alcohol toxicity.

"When you are drinking spirits overseas, opt for reputable establishments and steer clear of local brews or unspecified beverages," Falconer warned.

"If something feels off, such as a fatigue that's way worse than usual or sight issues – get medical help immediately."

The entire roster of nations listed as posing a risk of industrial alcohol contamination now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
