The Tottenham defender scored twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had netted only one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
